Kirby Does Eat Commercial Dog Foods

I enjoy preparing the majority of Kirby's meals using wholesome ingredients purchased at my local grocery store. It's not only fun to be creative, it's reassuring to know his body is absorbing the healthy stuff it needs to flourish as opposed to the many dangerous commercial brands I truly believe have such toxins and unsavory ingredients that can cause untimely death and disease.

There are times I'm in a hurry and have forgotten to take a prepared meal out of the freezer in time to thaw, or I know Kirby is craving some crunchy kibble (something I hope to one day figure out how to make). Those are the times I reach for the convenience of commercially prepared dog food.

Having said that, I want to clarify I am extremely particular about the commercial dog foods I feed him. There are many brands that don't meet my criteria and I usually have to order online to get the ones that do.  I probably pay more for his food overall but the veterinary savings more than make up for it.

Kirby, at four years old, is always full of energy, has a keen sense of smell, and his expressive eyes are always bright. His coat is shiny, soft and doesn't shed, the itchy, flaky skin he had as a puppy is long gone, and even though he could stand to lose a pound or two, he always passes his yearly checkups with flying colors. Other than scheduled visits to his veterinarian for vaccines and nail clippings, the only illnesses he has suffered thus far are:

  1. His first Thanksgiving when he was given some turkey and dressing loaded with onions which was before I knew better.
  2. The time he was bitten by a large dog.
  3. The time he showed signs of illness from some treats made in China.
  4. The time we took precautions to have him tested when we discovered he may have been eating a Taste of The Wild product that was recalled (I didn't have the original bag to verify the recall info). The test results were enough to prompt his veterinarian to place him on a good antibiotic.
  5. The time he ate several vienna sausages.
  6. The time he ate some Hershey Kisses

I firmly believe Kirby has a strong immune system, no skin or food allergies of any kind, and bounces back quickly from food induced illnesses because, along with a daily multi-vitamin, he eats a good rotation of healthy ingredients which keep his body in prime condition.

When choosing a good commercial brand, I always read the ingredients list and if I see something I don't like, I immediately pass.  Next I like to run the product by Dog Food Advisor for their rating after an intense breakdown of the ingredients.  Recently I've also begun using the Slim Doggy App  which can be downloaded on the iphone and hopefully soon on the android phones.  This app even gives the number of daily calories required depending on your dog's current weight. (I really must add the calorie and nutrition content to my recipes).

Once the product has passed these criteria, the final step is passing Kirby's gourmand taste buds which is not easy as there have been quite a few where he sniffed and walked away or took a bite only to drop it back out of his mouth.  Let me tell you once a dog has acquired a taste for truly good food he will not settle for anything less!

You can check my list of the commercial brands I do, or will, feed Kirby HERE.   Do you have any faves I haven't listed that I really must consider? Do you take your dog's food choices as seriously as I do?

Portion Control For Healthy Feeding

I do bake and cook a lot for Kirby but he doesn't eat as much as you would think.  If I let him free feed he would be one fat boy considering how much he loves food.  I like to know how much he is eating and if he isn't eating which is a sign something is wrong so I believe in portion control.  The meals I cook for him are frozen in individual sizes for future feedings while the treats are shared with other dogs, especially the ones that come through the drive thru at the bank where I work.

Kirby gets roughly one cup, more or less, of food per day - a small handful of kibble in the morning and a meal at night. He gets tiny pea size treats when we practice his tricks and a bedtime treat.  Some days he gets extras, especially on the weekends, so I adjust accordingly.  He isn't lean but he isn't overweight so we have a somewhat happy medium.

Are you wondering how much to feed your dog each day? It's recommended that a dog should eat 2-3% of his total body weight daily. Puppies would need a bit more while older or inactive dogs would need less.  There are two ways to figure this.

The first is the easiest and the one I've always used.  Multiply your dog's weight by 16 to get his total body weight in ounces.  For example, Kirby weighs 15 pounds so 15 lb x 16 oz = 240 oz which is his total body weight in ounces.  Next divide that number by 2% for the total minimum amount of daily food to feed (240 oz. x .02 = 4.8 oz.) and divide by 3% for the total maximum amount of daily food to feed (240 oz. x .03 = 7.2 oz.) One cup is 8 oz so we stay pretty close.

The other way is to count calories.  I don't count my calories consumed so I'm not going to count his. Having said this I have a friend who counts every calorie she consumes so this is a personal choice as to what works best for you.  One thing I do want to mention is I don't eat a lot of sugar and fat so neither does Kirby.

Dogs weighing less than 20 pounds require 40 calories per pound per day. For instance, Kirby weighs 15 pounds so he needs 600 calories per day (15 lb x 40 = 600). Dogs that weigh over 100 pounds usually need about 15 calories per pound of body weight per day. For example, a 100 pound German Shepard will need roughly 1,500 calories per day (100 lb x 15 = 1,500).

You can feed one daily meal or divide it into two feedings. I used to feed Kirby one meal in the evening but he seemed to be starving by meal time so I changed to two daily meals which suits him better. These are standard guidelines which can be adjusted to fit your dog.  Is he too thin, add more.  Is he overactive, add more. Is he on the chubby side, add less.  Is he laid back or elderly, add less.

Royal Canin Doggie Day Spa Giveaway

Last week we were contacted by Royal Canin with an exciting review/giveaway opportunity to announce The Royal Canin Treatment Sweepstakes where one lucky pet owner will win free food and grooming for life along with a shopping spree for their extra small companions. The sweepstakes runs through June 1, 2012 and also offers pet parents the chance to win more than 500 instant win prizes ranging from gift cards and toys, to travel and grooming gear.

Why the sweepstakes? To celebrate the launch of the new Royal Canin comprehensive line of X-SMALL dog foods formulated specifically for dogs weighing less than eight pounds. The new line includes four formulas – PUPPY, ADULT, MATURE +8 and AGING +12 – that cater to the unique physiological traits inherent in the tiniest of dog breeds.

According to the American Kennel Club, toy dog breeds, such as Pekingese, Maltese and Papillons, now make up more than 59 percent of the small breed segment.  In fact, Royal Canin® research uncovered the fact that extra-small dogs weighing less than 8 pounds could benefit from more comprehensive nutrition, made specifically with their needs in mind.

“As extra-small breeds grow in popularity, more and more pet owners are looking for the best nutrition to help their dogs live long and healthy lives,” said Dr. Brent Mayabb, veterinarian and manager of education and development at Royal Canin. “Until now, there hasn’t been a product for these tiny companions. The new Royal Canin X-SMALL formulas take into account the dogs’ unique physiology, their specific energy needs and even their extra-small jaw size, to provide them with optimal nutrition.”

All of the Royal Canin X-SMALL formulas contain premium nutrition to support heart health, highly digestible proteins and fibers to help regulate digestion and prevent constipation and are enriched with EPA and DHA to help maintain a beautiful skin and coat.  In addition, the formulas feature a kibble designed to promote dental health, by reducing tartar build-up as the dog chews.

Royal Canin’s X-SMALL product line and enhanced MINI offerings are the latest innovation in the company’s science-based approach to canine nutrition, which helped introduce the concept of size-based feeding for miniature breed puppies more than 20 years ago.

First, My Review!

The very first thing I really appreciated was that it comes in a zip lock resealable bag so I don't have to place it in an airtight container to keep it fresh once opened.  The second thing I liked was the smell which was fresh and aromatic as opposed to that funky smell most kibble brands have.  The third thing I liked was that the kibble is very small making it easier for Kirby to chew.

Kirby is particular about what he will and will not eat so I wasn't sure what his reaction would be.  I poured some in a small bowl and presented it to him for dinner.  He walked up to it, sniffed, and walked away.  I was disappointed for only about a minute because then he turned back around, headed to the bowl, and devoured every kibble.  He never lifted his head from the bowl until it was gone.  Success! That was this past Monday so wanting to be fair I have fed him a bowl of Royal Canin almost every night (he prefers a variety of different meals) which he ate with gusto. (I am also going to have to buy the Royal Canin cat food since my cat Chelsea got a taste and decided she liked Kirby's new kibble very much). Another added benefit was his poo - it stayed firm and small with very little smell.

I searched the web and not only could I not find a bad review, I found several influential sites listing Royal Canin as a highly recommended dog food.  Kirby and I give Royal Canin dog food 4 paws and a wag!

Royal Canin’s new X-SMALL dog food can be found at PetSmart (regular $11.99 on sale for $9.99) and PETCO ($13.49), as well as independent pet stores nationwide. So if your dog is a mixed breed like Kirby this is just what you've been looking for and if you have a purebred then you should know Royal Canin also carries breed specific dog foods.

NOTE: Kirby actually weighs in at roughly 15 pounds so after this bag is gone I'm going to purchase the Royal Canin® MINI™ Line for Dogs Weighing 9 to 22 Pounds.  There is one for weight maintenance I'm excited about since the Kirbster can be a chunky monkey!

Now for the Giveaway!

Royal Canin has put together an amazing bag of goodies sure to make any dog look forward to, no demand, bath time! This Doggy Day Spa gift pack is valued at $80 and includes:

  • A 2.5 lb bag of Royal Canin’s new X-SMALL dog food
  • Fresh & Clean Oatmeal and Baking Soda shampoo
  • Grooming lead (for easier bathing sessions)
  • Earth Bath Natural grooming wipes
  • Microfiber Pet Towels (pack of 5)
  • Tropiclean Toothbrush and toothpaste combo pack
  • Li'l Pals Bristle brush
  • Li'l Pals Nail trimmer

This creamy shampoo lathers well with a tropical scent, it didn't bother his eyes, and he hasn't been itchy at all. Kirby doesn't fight me when taking a bath except when I clean his face - this grooming lead kept him securely in the tub so I never had to hold onto him.  It would also be useful for grooming time if you have an anxious pup. The grooming wipes are great since we use them ALL the time to clean Kirby's feet when he comes in from the backyard since he's a born digger.  I brush Kirby's teeth daily with Tropiclean using my finger - this kit has a regular doggie toothbrush and a finger toothbrush I absolutely love.

I know you are now drooling over this package!  So what do you have to do to enter?  Just follow the directions in the Rafflecopter widget below. Good luck!

This Giveaway is open to U.S. addresses only due to shipping costs at the request of Royal Canin.

Disclosure: We received a bag of Royal Canin X-Small dog food for review.  We received the Doggie Day Spa package as an incentive, however, we were not paid for this review and all opinions are entirely our own.
