Starbuck Puppucino Copycat Recipe

puppucino_01.JPG

Ok so I just couldn't resist this one. Recently Kirby had his first Starbuck Puppucino which is free but in reality cost me almost $7.00 for that fancy cup of joe I couldn't resist. We will probably do this again when we are traveling but definitely not on a regular basis. It's also rather messy so have some wet wipes available for cleaning that sticky muzzle.

What might you ask is a puppucino? It's a simple shot of whipped cream in a little plastic cup. Kirby loved it licking that cup cleaner than a dishwasher.  I knew immediately this could be replicated at home for a healthier treat at a fraction of the cost. There are three ways to do this - dairy free, using dairy, and store bought.

Replacements #1 (dairy-free) and #2 are the healthiest and only take 15 minutes. Most people will reach for Replacements #3 and #4 which don't contain anything toxic to dogs. However, they do contain corn syrup and carrageenan so I would refrain from feeding these. If you must then please only feed as a special treat which means sparingly in a very small amount.

Replacement #1

Real Whipped Cream using whipping cream or heavy cream and vanilla. It only takes about 5 minutes to make and will hold for a few hours in the refrigerator. Good instructions can be found at The Kitchn. It contains 91 calories with 83 from fat per 1/2 cup serving. Kirby doesn't have a problem with dairy so usually this is the one I make.

Replacement #2

Coconut Whipped Cream

Now you can make your own healthy Starbuck Puppucino.

Yields: 4 - 1/2 cup servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: None

Nutrition facts: 257 calories, 213 from fat

Ingredients

  • 1 (14 ounce) can coconut cream (or full-fat coconut milk) refrigerated for 24 hours
  • 2 tablespoons coconut sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Place your mixing bowl and beater in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes to chill.
  2. Carefully remove the can of coconut cream from the refrigerator without shaking or tipping it. Remove the top of the can, then use a spoon to carefully spoon out the thick layer of coconut cream that should have separated to the top of the can, and transfer it to your chilled mixing bowl. Stop scooping when you reach the water in the bottom of the can which you'll discard. Save it for another recipe or let your pup drink it.
  3. Beat the coconut cream with your whisk attachment on medium speed for 2-4 minutes or until the cream becomes light and fluffy and small peaks form. Add in your sweetener and vanilla extract and beat until incorporated.

Don’t use “lite” coconut milk and avoid brands with guar gum listed as an ingredient. A can of coconut cream is equivalent to the cream from two cans of coconut milk so only use half the sweetener and vanilla if you are using coconut milk.  Other sweeteners to try would be maple syrup or honey.

Some brands of coconut milk whip up better than others and even cans of the SAME brand of coconut milk have been known to perform differently.  Be advised that if it doesn’t work, it may not be you, it may be the brand you're using. I have found that sometimes placing the whipped cream, bowl and beater, in the freezer for about 10 minutes will thicken it up.

If all else fails I just pour the mixture into silicon molds and freeze. Kirby is happy either way.

Replacement #3

Reddi Whip Fat Free which comes in a can. 2 teaspoons equal 5 calories with less that 1 gram sugar and o grams fat. Ingredients are Nonfat Milk, Cream (Adds a trivial amount of fat), Sugar, Corn Syrup, Maltodextrin, Inulin (Chicory Extract), Cellulose, Mono- and Diglycerides Polysorbate 80, Artificial Flavors, and Carrageenan.

Replacement #4

Low Fat Cool Whip which can be kept in the freezer and served straight from the tub. Two tablespoons equal 15 calories with 1 gram sugar and 0 fat.  Ingredients are Water, Corn Syrup, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (Coconut and Palm Kernel Oils), High Fructose Corn Syrup, Less than Two Percent of Sodium Caseinate (from Milk), Natural and Artificial Flavor, Xanthan and Guar Gums, Polysorbate 60, Sorbitan Monostearate, and Beta Carotene (Color).  I have to be honest and admit Kirby does get a spoonful around the holidays since we do use it on several human desserts.
